Oh my god Ronaldo!! Where did you get that handbag?

It is a good job Wayne Rooney does not care a jot about individual accolades... because it is a long time since he received one of any significance.

It was 2010 when he was voted Player of the Year by his fellow professionals and Footballer of the Year by football writers.

It was almost four years ago when he last won a Player of the Month award.

Since then, Peter Odemwingie has won three.

Unsurprisingly, he is not on the shortlist for the 2013 Ballon D’Or . Not that he has had a bad year. He never does. He is consistently very good.

He collected his fifth Premier League winners’ medal and finished England’s World Cup qualification programme as top scorer with six goals despite playing in only seven of the 10 matches.

In Portugal’s regular campaign, Cristiano Ronaldo managed only four goals in eight appearances – one of those featuring a hat-trick against hapless Northern Ireland.

But his subsequent hat-trick against Sweden in the play-offs should now make Ronaldo favourite to collect the Ballon D’Or.

Whether he loosens Lionel Messi’s hold on that award or not, one thing is certain – the perception is that Ronaldo is operating on a different level to his old team-mate.

There is little doubt Rooney is only on the coat-tails of what Arsene Wenger might call, the super-elite. And a tweet posted in the wake of Ronaldo’s exploits in Stockholm gave a telling insight into the reasons.
